Welcome to 2000 and Late, a trends and pop culture newsletter giving credit where it is due.

My name is Abby Adesanya and I’m a writer who has worked in media for just long enough to think it’s time to start my own newsletter. This is 2000 and Late.

The scene in Devil Wears Prada where Miranda Priestly lays into Andy Sachs about exactly where her “lumpy blue sweater” comes from might be the most accurate depiction of this newsletter. Except, edit some Y2K NYE glasses onto Meryl Streep, label Anne Hathaway as “literally culture as we know it,” and add a scoop of empathy, then we’ll really be talking.

Though I am a millennial, let me make it clear that this newsletter is not a takedown of Gen Z or any blessed 2000s babies. In the words of Sammie Scott, the current zoomer vs. millennial discourse is strictly white people business.

Things this newsletter will be doing:

  • Examining today’s trends in entertainment, tech, fashion, beauty, and overall pop culture, and reporting on how the years 2000-2010 continue to show up within them. (2010-2020 will get some love too, but society’s collective flop era began in 2016) Depending on the subject, my takes might be insightful, sad, joyful, weird, or straight up nonsense. But it’s my newsletter so, we can do that here!

  • Sharing personal memories, anecdotes, and formative experiences of mine during those years, tying them into current trends and discussing how they impact me today

  • Celebrating monumental anniversaries, my favorite 2000s ephemera, and “This Month In 20XX” for a hit of everyone’s favorite drug: nostalgia

For example, did you know Twitter was founded 15 years ago, on March 21, 2006? Twitter has many (so many) evils and I’d like to pretend that the world would be better without it but that’s untrue. If not for @jack, we would have never experienced the joy of @cornyassbitch’s DON’T GET FIRED THREAD or, most importantly, this:

If you like how the above sounds and want 2000 and Late in your inbox on a regular basis, drop your email address below. Extra credit for anyone who has a @yahoo.com or, somehow, a @hotmail.com email address – a website I definitely thought was “for adults” in middle school.

Follow me on Instagram and Twitter to guilt trip me if I’m ever late on a post or, you know, to show me some love. And don’t forget, everything’s better when you share it with your friends! It being this newsletter!!!

Y2K walked so what's hot in today's fashion, beauty, entertainment, and pop culture could run. 21 years later, Abby Adesanya is writing about it on a regular basis.
